As the seasons shift and we experience our last few weeks of winter for some, a blending of warm and winter temperatures for others, and the nose-tickling pollination for others, we are still in a very susceptible flu and allergy season.

As much as we try to keep our immune systems in tip top shape, life happens and will sometimes get the best of us.  Sometimes we need an onset of a flu to completely tear us down so that we do spend a day on the couch in order to fully reset and rejuvenate our tired bodies.

Our bodies are magnificent and are so much smarter than we give them credit for.  Having an intuitive relationship with your body and its functionality can truly change your life.  We often times “push through” or follow the principles of “sleep when your dead” in our “hustle” heavy society that sometimes our body has to truly break us down to get the rest it needs.  On the other hand we often run ourselves into the ground and our bodies simply can’t catch up.

Well if you start feeling like you are “getting sick” DO NOT PUSH THROUGH. Don’t wait two more days until you have a fever of 100 degrees, can’t talk, and are going through boxes of tissues like it’s your job.  Listen to your body, give it the rest it needs and unplug yourself so that you nip your symptoms early instead of letting them get the best of you.  Unless there is something deeper going on inside of you, a common cold or flu should not send you to the emergency room or knock you out for days on end.

If you trip and scrape your knee on the sidewalk, you aren’t going to keep dragging it across the ground until you hit bone, right?  The same goes for our bodies.

On a Friday afternoon (I got lucky this happened on the cusp of a weekend), I suddenly felt a weird scratchiness in my throat and my eyes got that weird burning sensation I hadn’t felt in a very long time. Immediately my red flags went up and I thought “oh no, I’m not getting sick am I?”  And instead of my usual “oh well we will see what happens,” mentality, I took action.  I listened to my body and the signals it was providing to me. I didn’t look past them, but I took them as REAL SYMPTOMS and treated them as if I was already in the 101-degree fever stage.

I listened to my body, I took an immediate day of full rest, followed by the following self-diagnosed healing protocol. And it actually worked! I was cured in less than 72 hours without going through the treacherous sleepless night sleeps, sweats, coughing up a lung for days on end. I did still get a full day on the couch with Netflix and a good book (best part right?), but I wasn’t trapped for a week and then had to deal with the anxieties of everything else I “missed out on.”

And the best part is you can heal yourself too! Except you don’t even have to think about it because I figured out a plan that actually works. And it works utilizing all-natural remedies BONUS!).

Please keep in mind, some of the various items listed below you will have to go out and buy if you don’t keep them readily stocked. Upon your initial onset of an inkling of symptoms get to the store and stock up so you don’t have to do it later.

Follow The Steps Below To Follow My Plan That Worked For Me:

First things first, NO gluten, dairy, processed sugars, alcohol, caffeine or animal proteins. Yes, the saltines with chicken noodle soup and a sprite on your previous sick days are long gone. You need to set your body up for success so that it can start resting, repairing, and regenerating your immune system back up to working order. You need to work with your body not against it.

  • At the first sign of a symptom take action immediately do not wait around
    • Get to the grocery store, local farmers market, health store, etc. to stock up so you don’t have to leave the house again for 24 hours.
  • REST – Lay down. Prop your feet up and get your body into as comfortable a position as possible so that it isn’t stressed.
    • And no sitting at a desk does not count.  Get horizontal.
  • Reduce the amount of stress around you.   Mindfully shut down your work so that you can focus on you.  Not this isn’t a time to get caught up on emails, finish your taxes, or take on a new project from the couch – your body and mind need to focus on healing you. Nothing else.  Trust me, this is very important.
  • SLEEP – your body heals itself when you are asleep. Sleep and sleep as long as possible.   If you can, go to bed early. If you can, sleep in until your body is ready to get out of bed. If you need it, take an afternoon nap.
  • NOURISH your body with warm liquids, immune boosting foods, fruits and vegetables, and the right supplements (see suggested plan below).
  • SUPPLEMENTS – I suggest taking a Dandelion Root supplement (2 capsules) 3x per day, for these 3 days and then reducing to (2 capsules) 1x per day for the remaining couple of weeks following. I also recommend to take a turmeric supplement 1x daily during the process and of course to continue with your usual supplement or vitamin routine.
  • HYDRATION – you need to hydrate your body to flush the bad stuff out of you.  You must get a minimum of 8 glasses of water in per day, plus additional herbal teas and hot liquids.  Frequently having to go pee should really be the only thing you ‘have’ to do in this process.
  • HERBAL TEAS – you’ll need to load up on herbal teas to receive optimal healing benefits. Echinacea Plus from Traditional Medicinals is one to drink a couple times a day
  • HOT BROTH – Try making this super nutritious vegetable broth to sip on whenever necessary or before your lunch or dinner meals. Honestly you can drink this all day to see radical healing benefits. CLICK HERE FOR RECIPE
  • HONEY – if you are going to consume honey (which I suggest you do) only consume raw honey, do not consume anything that comes in the plastic bear from the grocery store and do not consume it if it is not locally sourced, raw honey.  All else is basically sugary water.
  • SWEAT – if you have one available to you or can find one in your area getting at least a 30min infrared sauna session in for 3 days back to back will speed up the process. Steaming hot baths (don’t burn yourself) will also work wonders. Suggestion to incorporate Epsom salt or a cbd bath bomb for additional benefits. Try to stay in the bath for at least 30min. I like to add a hot cup of tea with my bath to really get my body relaxed and also stimulate additional sweating.

Continue on throughout your week eating as healthy as possible and still incorporating fruits and vegetables as your primary foods.  If you need to eat animal protein, go back slowly with lighter proteins options and slowly build your system back up.   Try to continue avoiding gluten, dairy, processed sugars, caffeine and alcohol for at least another 5 days to ensure your system has completely rid itself of inflammation.

It suggested to make more of the Immune Boosting Vegetable broth and continue to have one cup before all of your meals in the following few days or week. Best of luck!
